Having made a number of modern classics, going all the way back to 's "Jaws," Spielberg was universally regarded by both his peers and film historians as one of the greatest American filmmakers in the history of the medium.

Born in Cincinnati and raised primarily in Phoenix, Arizona, Spielberg began making super 8 shorts films when he was still in his teens. At 16 he made his first feature length film, the science fiction adventure film "Firelight"which would later serve as the inspiration for his future masterwork "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" Wanting to do nothing else with his life but make movies, Spielberg left Arizona at 18 to attend film school in Los Angeles. Spielberg dropped out of CSULB after a year, however, after he was signed to a 7-year TV directing contract with Universal based on the strength of his short film "Amblin'" Spielberg directed a number of television shows while under contract at Universal, but it was his made-for-TV road thriller "Duel" that proved to be the break he needed to make the leap into movies.

After the success of "Duel," Spielberg directed the critically acclaimed crime drama "Sugarland Express"which starred Goldie Hawn. It was his next film about a renegade great white shark off the coast of a New England resort town that would make the phrase "blockbuster" practically synonymous with Spielberg's name. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and took home three Academy Awards.

For Spielberg, the massive success of "Jaws" would prove to be just the start of one of the most charmed filmmaking careers in Hollywood history. Over the next several decades he directed a wide array of universally beloved films that are now considered modern classics. In addition to directing, Spielberg was also a prolific producer. Throughout his six decades in show business, Spielberg produced over film and television projects.

Furthermore, he's also taken home three Academy Awards, and has received scores of other nominations for his film and television work. In Spielberg directed his 32nd feature length film, "Ready Player One. View All Photos View All. News My Account sign up log in log out. No Score Yet.

In he made his first television movie, Duela taut, almost claustrophobic exercise in psychosis that was more intense than typical TV fare it was released theatrically in Europe. Although Spielberg permitted star Dennis Weaver —who played a motorist chased by a homicidal truck driver—to register a one-note impression of sweaty terror throughout the movie, his handling of the action sequences was staged and executed with bravado.

It featured Roy Scheider as the police chief of a resort town who battles a man-eating white shark. Joining him are Richard Dreyfuss as a marine biologist and Robert Shaw as a shark hunter. The highly praised thriller received an Academy Award nomination for best picture, and its ominous soundtrack by John Williams won an Oscar.

Spielberg then directed the mystical science-fiction tale Close Encounters of the Third Kindwhich he also wrote. Dreyfuss was cast as the lead, and he submitted one of the best performances of his career, as a telephone lineman who encounters an unidentified flying object and subsequently becomes obsessed with UFOs.

For the film, Spielberg received his first Academy Award nomination for best director.

After the disappointing —which was received as an unfunny comedy, despite the presence of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd—Spielberg directed Raiders of the Lost Arka loving, expert if slightly redundant tribute to old adventure serials. The film and its sequels, which starred Harrison Ford as handsome archaeologist Indiana Jonesused rich colour cinematography, brisk editing, memorable musical soundtracks, and inventive special effects to create a cinematic experience that was typically light yet highly suspenseful.

Spielberg received his second Academy Award nomination for best director; the film was also a best picture nominee. Henry Thomas gave a strong performance as the boy who discovers and befriends the stranded alien, and Dee Wallace portrayed his sympathetic mom. The film also featured Drew Barrymore in one of her first roles. Nevertheless, it found an audience that appreciated the cast—which included Whoopi GoldbergMargaret Avery, and Oprah Winfreyall of whom were nominated for Academy Awards—as well as the script by Menno Meyjes and the score by coproducer Quincy Jonesboth of which were also Academy Award-nominated.

The film received a nomination for best picture, but Spielberg failed to earn an Oscar nod, a slight that created a small scandal at the time. More important, however, Spielberg had made one of the few commercially successful films about the experience of African Americans, paving the way for similar projects to be green-lighted.

Spielberg chose another critically acclaimed book as the basis of his next film. But where The Color Purple was able to convey emotional truth, Empire of the Sun almost let the story about its young protagonist Christian Bale drown under a wave of pyrotechnics.

It was a box-office failure. Although Indiana Jones was a hit, Always failed to find an audience. What's confusing about this documentary is not what they decided to show, but what they decided to leave out. Maybe its too early for a full retrospective as the subject is still alive and working and creating, but then what exactly is the point of this documentary, other than it comes out on the 40th anniversary year of "Close Encounters"?

After Spielberg shuffles off this mortal coil the interviews gained in the process of making this film will serve admirably in the making of what will probably have to be a series of documentary films that follow Steven Spielberg's life and career, but as it stands this seems like a Blu-Ray special feature.

There are many years and films that are completely skipped or glossed over, there is barely a mention of all the success he's had as a producer, and there's no real build up or glory to his triumphs or his failures.

It's surface-level and polite. What would be more interesting, and perhaps more revealing, would be Behind the Scenes documentaries that we already have that feature Spielberg, strung together with new interviews, and footage that presents context, and present his life this way.

As it stands what this Doc offers is a quick overview and celebrity cameos that isn't all together uninteresting if only hindered by it's inability to commit to deep dives of the subject's career.
